Kevn Kinney in San Francisco!

Postby king_rhoton » Thu May 27, 2010 10:34 pm

Alrighty, it's that time again--Carlton and I are pleased to announce Kevn's second annual San Francisco shindig! And our opener is well-known to all of us; we're bending the rules a bit and having Aaron Tasjan again, but this time he's going to be sporting a spiffy new accessory: his Madison Square Gardener co-conspirator, midwesterly Mark Stepro!

This time around, our folk forum will be the Gumption Theater at the San Francisco Urban School. As this is a high school, this will be a dry event, but we'll make up for that in other ways. Be warned, though; no one will be seated during the climactic third half of the show! Show specific are:

Saturday, June 12, 2010
Urban School
1563 Page Street
San Francisco, California 94117
Doors: 6:30pm
Show: 7:00pm
Cost: as always, entirely free

As this is the Haight, parking is challenging. Best bets are the two lots at Stanyan and either Waller or Haight, or possibly free parking along the Panhandle on Oak Street. If you can take public transit there, that's your best bet. The 6, 33, 37, 43, and 71 MUNI lines all run within a block of the venue.

Hope to see you there!

Amazing evening for the Teetotalin' Trucktop. We had special guest Tim Nielsen (some of you might have heard of him) sitting in on bass and mandolin, Jeff Sullivan came up to perform several songs on bongo (subsequently replaced by MSGer Mark Stepro making his debut on same), and Aaron played piano throughout the whole Kevn set. Carlton can probably give a more complete set list shortly, but I recall "Passing Through", "Drivin' n' Cryin'", and the first live performance of the new "Baseball Cards and Bicycles" song, which was very cool! Kevn had a record-player on-stage and was spinning vinyl occasionally between songs, sometimes using it to draw inspiration for the next song.

The MSGers took my request for "3 Marlenas"->"Sweet Jane", and they played one of my favorite Aaron solo songs, "My Hands". We even had a first for any of the shows I've taped: we got MSGers to re-do their opening song because I had forgotten to start the audio recorder. As I often tell Chris, audio just isn't my priority, but I don't intend to omit it entirely! I'll have to think about whether to include both performances or simply do a proper editing job to slip one one in in place of the other--but I don't want Kevn to think I can do that for the edits he wants too!

This show is 4th in the queue, which probably means something like a September release.

Thanks to everyone who came out, both on and off stage (oh, and Todd too--side-stage)! And special thanks to Gwen and Sandra for helping us get this off the ground!

As King has indicated.....totally awesome show. Was this maybe the first DNC 'Unplugged" show??

Because I was running around making sure the wheels weren't coming off unexpectedly, I neglected to jot down the setlist as usual. So it'll probably be a day or two before I can listen to the tape and get an exact list. I think there may have actually been 3 new songs played. I vaguely remember that Jeff's last number before having to leave early was either Chico & Marie or Hey, Landlord.

As King said - Thanks to all those who ventured out. And special thanks to Sandra and Gwen for tolerating my and King's "hobby". Guess it's time to start working on the next east coast show.

So, Carlton, you're going to be working on getting the rights to include the tracks from those albums Kevn was playing, right?

Hmmm..........or do we edit out all those snippets and lose the total continuity of the show?? I'm guessing this one probably shouldn't be posted for download (the Dime moderators would probably have a fit) even though those records have most likely been out of print for decades.

I decided to go ahead a give a quick listen to the recording. Here's a pass at a bare bones list. There was lots of story telling, conversation and spinning of obscure records between the songs. Should make for an intersting dvd.

I believe "Standing on the Street" is actually "I Don't Ask Much For", although since it's unreleased, that title is subject to change. I think that name's a bit tortured, but it's straight from Kevn's mouth--it's not a construct up with which I'd come. :) (Also done at the 11/17/2008 Truckstop.)

I reference it as 'Standing on the Street' since that was what Kevn said in the intro.

On another note: I had about 8 posters I made for the show left over that I brought back home. Anyone wanting a copy, send me a PM with a mailing address. First come, first served. You can take a look at it here in reduced size form
